| The CoolRunning Australia 5km Challenge is
a test of your running speed over a flat 5km course of your own choice. The course
can be a race, on the road, your local track, or your own backyard course through your
neighbourhood. You get to choose the course and measure your own time (be honest!), and
compare your results here with others at CoolRunning
Australia.
Objective
- our objective is to encourage people to participate and to provide an incentive to
improve your speed and better your personal best times. We have chosen 5km as a
distance because it is achievable for those new to running, as well as a distance for
those seasoned runners wanting to improve speed. You may provide improved results as often
as you like and we will update the results table accordingly. Training, tactics and
encouragement will be discussed here at CoolRunning
Australia.
Course - it's your
choice. It can be flat or hilly. It can be a 5km race you enter, or perhaps a 5km split in
a race, or you can choose your own 5km distance in your neighbourhood (we will trust that
it's 5km).
Distance - How
do you know it's a 5km course? Ideally entering a measured 5km race, or running laps of a
400m track will provide you with a pretty accurate 5km distance and result. However, if
these aren't available, other alternatives include measuring your course with a bicycle
computer, car, GPS or mapping software. If this isn't practical, then we will take your
word for it. If you require further help on determining a suitable course, please email me
below for assistance. Also, if your best time for 10km is 55mins, and you suddenly
run under 20mins for 5km, ask yourself whether the course really is 5km long. It probably
isn't.

On-going Challenge We have realised that there are some
people wanting to continue the 5km Challenge. As such we have left the 5km Challenge in
operation. Entries from the initial CR 5km Challenge were intentionally not copied over
to the On-going Challenge. Please re-enter your times.
Results The initial CR 5km challenge concluded on
30th January 2004. Two random prizes, kindly donated by Athletic Edge, 48 Frenchmans Rd,
Randwick NSW were awarded.
